First, What Is a Prompt?
If you're new to AI, you may hear people talking about "prompts."
Don't let the word make this sound more complicated than it is.
If you type, "Give me three ideas for dinner," that's a prompt.
If you say, "Explain Medicare to me using simple language," that's a prompt.
If you ask, "Help me write a birthday message for my grandson," that's a prompt too.
You don't need to memorize special commands. Just explain what you want as clearly as you can.
10 Prompts Worth Saving
If you save nothing else from this page, save these. They can improve almost any conversation you have with AI.
"Explain this to me in simple language."
"Ask me questions before you answer."
"Ask me one question at a time."
"Give me one step at a time. Don't move to the next step until I am ready."
"What am I missing?"
"What could go wrong?"
"What parts of this answer should I verify?"
"Give me three options and explain the difference between them."
"Help me turn what I know into something useful."
"Help me figure out the smallest and least expensive way to test this idea."
Prompts for Everyday Life
Some of the best uses of AI aren't dramatic. They're little things that save time or make your day easier.
"Help me organize everything I need to do today into a simple schedule."
"I have chicken, potatoes, carrots, onions, and basic spices. Give me three easy dinner ideas."
"Turn this list of groceries into a shopping list organized by sections of the store."
"Help me create a checklist for cleaning and organizing my garage."
Prompts for Learning
AI can become a patient personal teacher. You decide the subject and the speed.
"I am a complete beginner. Explain this subject to me using simple language."
"Teach me this subject one short lesson at a time."
"Before teaching me, ask me what I already know."
"Give me an example from everyday life so I can understand this better."
"Give me a five-question quiz to see whether I understand what you just taught me."
Prompts for Travel
AI can help you think through a trip before you start booking anything.
"Help me plan a three-day trip. I prefer a relaxed pace. Ask me questions about my interests and budget before creating the itinerary."
"Create a packing checklist for my trip. Ask me where I'm going, how long I'll be there, and what activities I'm planning."
"Give me a list of questions I should ask a hotel before making my reservation."
Remember that AI may not have the latest prices, schedules, availability, policies, or travel requirements. Verify current information with the airline, hotel, attraction, government agency, or other official source.
Prompts for Family
"Help me write a warm message to a family member I haven't spoken with in a while."
"Give me ten fun questions I can ask my grandchildren to get them talking about their lives."
"Help me plan a simple family gathering that people of different ages can enjoy."
Preserve Your Family Stories
Here's one that could become something your family keeps for generations.
"I want to preserve stories from my life for my family. Interview me by asking one question at a time. Ask about my childhood, family, work, important events, funny memories, difficult times, and lessons I have learned."
Save your answers. Over time, AI can help you organize them into a family history, memoir, collection of stories, or book for your children and grandchildren.
Prompts for Hobbies
"I am interested in starting a new hobby. Ask me five questions about my interests, budget, physical ability, and available time, then suggest some possibilities."
"I already enjoy this hobby. Give me five ways I could take my skills to the next level."
"Create a simple 30-day learning plan for this hobby. Keep it enjoyable and realistic."
"What parts of my experience with this hobby might be useful to a beginner?"
Prompts for Technology
You don't have to understand technology before asking AI about it.
"Explain what this technology does using simple words and everyday examples."
"Help me do this on my phone one step at a time. Ask me what kind of phone I have first."
"Here is the error message I am seeing. Explain what it means before telling me what to try."
Apps and devices change, so if the AI's instructions don't match what you see, stop and check the current instructions from the manufacturer or service.
Prompts for Writing
"Turn these rough notes into a friendly letter. Keep it sounding natural."
"Make this message easier to understand without changing what I mean."
"Make this shorter and friendlier."
"Correct the grammar, but keep my voice and the way I normally speak."
Prompts for Saving Money
AI can help you organize information and think of questions you might not have considered.
"Help me organize these monthly expenses into needs, optional expenses, and things I should review."
"I'm thinking about buying this product. Ask me questions about how I will use it before helping me compare my choices."
"What ongoing or hidden costs should I think about before buying this?"
AI can help you think, but significant financial decisions deserve careful verification and, when appropriate, qualified professional advice.
Prompts for Discovering What You Know
This is where AI can become particularly interesting for someone who has decades of experience.
"Interview me about my career, hobbies, skills, and life experience. Ask me one question at a time and help me identify things I know that could be useful to other people."
"Ask me about problems I have learned how to solve during my career."
"What could I teach a beginner based on what I have told you about my experience?"
Prompts for Exploring Extra Income
AI is not a magic money machine. But it can help you think about whether your knowledge, experience, skills, or hobbies might solve a problem for somebody else.
"Based on the experience I have described, give me realistic ideas for ways I might use that knowledge to help other people."
"Could any of these skills be used for tutoring, consulting, a local service, freelance work, teaching, a guide, or a small business?"
"Who might actually pay for this kind of help, and what problem would I be solving for them?"
"What is the cheapest and simplest way I could test this idea before spending much money?"
"Tell me why this idea might fail. What am I overlooking?"
That last question is important. Don't use AI only to tell you why an idea is wonderful. Ask it to challenge the idea too.
Use AI to Get a Second Perspective
If an AI gives you an answer that matters, you can copy the answer and ask another AI to review it.
"Another AI gave me the answer below. Review it carefully. Tell me what looks correct, what might be wrong, what information may be missing, and what I should verify independently."
Remember that two AI systems agreeing does not automatically make something true. Important information should still be verified.
One Prompt Can Lead to Ten More
The prompts on this page are starting points, not magic formulas.
Once AI answers, continue talking.
Say:
"Tell me more."
"Give me another example."
"Make that simpler."
"What should I ask next?"
That's when AI starts becoming less like a search box and more like a conversation.
Keep Your Own AI Prompt Notebook
When you discover a question that produces a useful answer, save it.
You might keep a small notebook beside your computer or create a document called My AI Prompts.
Add prompts that work especially well for you. Soon you'll have your own personal collection built around your life, interests, projects, and goals.
This Is Only Part of the Toolkit
These examples can get you started, but knowing what to type is only one part of learning how to use AI well.
The Smart Senior's Guide to AI walks you through the entire process in plain language. It begins with your first AI conversation and then shows you how to make AI useful in everyday life, use it as a personal teacher, combine it with decades of experience, explore realistic income possibilities, develop ideas, recognize scams, catch possible AI mistakes, and know when you still need a human professional.
The book also includes the Smart Senior AI Toolkit, giving you ready-to-use prompts across many parts of life so you don't have to stare at an empty AI screen wondering what to ask.
