Information can sound authoritative and still be incomplete, outdated, misunderstood, exaggerated, or false. Fact-checking helps reduce those risks by comparing claims with credible evidence.
Fact-checking is not limited to finding obvious errors. It also examines whether a statement is current, fairly worded, supported by the source, presented in context, and clearly distinguished from opinion or prediction.
The objective is not to claim perfect accuracy. The objective is to use a repeatable process that improves reliability and makes corrections possible when new evidence appears.
The level of review depends on the subject, but certain categories of information deserve particular attention.
Publication dates, court decisions, product releases, historical events, deadlines, and regulatory milestones.
People, organizations, books, laws, agencies, technical projects, companies, and official positions.
Prices, percentages, market figures, transaction speeds, adoption numbers, survey results, and research findings.
Exact wording, speaker identity, source context, publication date, and whether the quotation is complete.
Legislation, court rulings, regulatory guidance, government actions, legal status, and effective dates.
Product features, blockchain capabilities, software behavior, system architecture, security practices, and specifications.
Whether the cited source actually supports the claim and whether the source has been represented accurately.
Names, dates, citations, quotations, research papers, technical details, and confident statements produced by AI systems.
Not every sentence requires the same level of review, but important claims generally follow this process.
Determine exactly what the statement says and what evidence would be needed to support it.
Find the official document, study, ruling, dataset, announcement, or technical reference whenever practical.
Check the author, organization, publication date, authenticity, relevance, and authority of the source.
Review surrounding language, conditions, methodology, limitations, definitions, and exceptions.
Check whether independent references support, qualify, update, or contradict the claim.
Make sure the final statement is no stronger or broader than the available evidence supports.
Identify uncertainty, estimates, assumptions, limitations, disagreements, and changing conditions.
Recheck the statement, source, link, date, context, grammar, and possible reader misunderstanding.
A statement cannot be checked effectively until it is clear what is being claimed. Broad or vague statements often combine several different claims that require separate evidence.
For example, saying that a technology is “faster, safer, cheaper, and widely adopted” contains at least four different claims. Each one may require different evidence.
Breaking a statement into smaller parts makes it easier to identify what is factual, what is interpretive, and what remains uncertain.
Whenever practical, important claims should be traced to the original source rather than relying only on a summary, headline, repost, or social media discussion.
Primary sources are especially important when checking legal rulings, technical specifications, official announcements, research findings, government actions, company policies, and direct quotations.
A secondary source may explain the information well, but the original record often provides the most accurate wording and context.
A source may appear professional and still be outdated, biased, irrelevant, promotional, or unsupported.
Does the author or organization have direct knowledge, recognized expertise, official responsibility, or access to the evidence?
Is the source genuine, complete, and published by the organization or person it claims to represent?
Is the source current enough for the claim, or has newer information replaced or modified it?
Does the source include data, documentation, methodology, references, or direct support for its conclusions?
Is the source intended to inform, sell, persuade, entertain, advocate, speculate, or promote?
Does the source directly support the specific claim, or does it merely discuss a related subject?
A headline, summary, isolated sentence, screenshot, or short social media post may remove important context.
The original source may contain conditions, exceptions, limitations, definitions, confidence ranges, warnings, or qualifications that materially change the meaning.
Fact-checking should examine the full passage and not simply confirm that a familiar phrase appears somewhere in the source.
Cross-referencing helps reveal whether a claim is broadly supported, disputed, incomplete, outdated, or based on a single interested source.
Determine whether credible independent sources report the same central facts.
Note where sources use different numbers, dates, definitions, interpretations, or assumptions.
A newer source may correct, expand, reverse, or replace earlier information.
Several articles repeating the same original claim do not necessarily count as independent confirmation.
A source may support a limited statement without supporting a stronger or more dramatic version of that statement.
Words such as “proves,” “guarantees,” “always,” “never,” “confirmed,” “official,” and “certain” should be used only when the evidence clearly supports them.
A report that something is being tested does not prove that it has been fully launched. A proposed law is not an enacted law. A forecast is not a guaranteed outcome. A company statement is not automatically independent verification.
Quotations can be powerful, but they require special care because even a small wording change can alter the meaning.
Verify who made the statement and whether the attribution comes from a reliable record.
Compare the quotation with the transcript, document, recording, interview, or original publication.
Review what came before and after the quoted words and whether the speaker was describing, questioning, rejecting, or supporting the idea.
A quotation may reflect an older position that has since changed.
A graphic containing a quotation should be traced to the original source rather than accepted automatically.
A summary of someone’s meaning should not be presented inside quotation marks as though it were their exact language.
Numbers often create an impression of certainty, but statistics can be misleading when the source, date, sample, unit, calculation, or definition is unclear.
A percentage without a baseline may exaggerate a change. A market figure may depend on the time it was recorded. A survey result may depend on the sample size and wording of the question.
Whenever possible, numerical claims should include enough context for readers to understand what the number represents.
AI systems can help identify questions, summarize documents, compare ideas, and organize research. They can also generate false details that sound completely convincing.
Confirm that the source exists, the title is correct, the author is real, and the source supports the claim.
AI may confuse similar people, organizations, court cases, product releases, or historical events.
Do not rely only on the AI summary when the underlying document is available.
Confidence in wording does not prove accuracy. Strong claims require strong evidence.
AI may invent studies, quotations, books, statistics, URLs, laws, or technical features.
AI knowledge may be incomplete or outdated, especially for recent events, laws, products, prices, and software.
Different systems may reveal disagreements or missing details, but agreement among AI tools is not proof by itself.
Final editorial judgment, interpretation, approval, and responsibility remain human.
Credible sources do not always reach the same conclusion. Responsible fact-checking should acknowledge the disagreement rather than hide it.
Determine what data, records, methods, or assumptions each source uses.
A later source may include new evidence or correct an earlier conclusion.
Sources may appear to disagree because they define the subject differently.
When the evidence does not support a single answer, the article should say so clearly.
Medical, legal, financial, cybersecurity, and technical claims may affect important decisions and therefore require additional care.
Check recognized medical authorities, current research, safety warnings, evidence quality, and whether the claim exceeds established findings.
Review the actual law, ruling, filing, jurisdiction, effective date, appeal status, and official interpretation.
Confirm prices, dates, assumptions, market conditions, risk statements, and whether scenarios are being presented as guarantees.
Verify instructions with official technical documentation and avoid presenting untested procedures as universally safe.
Fact-checked educational content does not replace personalized guidance from qualified medical, legal, financial, technical, or security professionals.
After research and drafting, the page should receive a final review focused on accuracy, clarity, source support, reader understanding, and technical quality.
This review may also include checking headings, internal links, metadata, structured data, spelling, grammar, disclaimers, image descriptions, and mobile readability.
Articles may require revision as new evidence appears, links change, laws evolve, products update, markets move, or errors are reported.
Review pages after significant legal, technical, scientific, financial, or regulatory developments.
Replace or update links when official pages move, documents are archived, or resources disappear.
Examine correction requests and supporting evidence submitted by readers.
Revise wording that was accurate at publication but has become incomplete or outdated.
Expand articles when important studies, official reports, or technical documentation become available.
Clarify, revise, remove, or replace information when credible evidence shows that a correction is necessary.
