Modern readers encounter information through websites, books, news reports, videos, podcasts, social media, search engines, artificial intelligence, personal conversations, and online communities.

Some information is well documented. Some is outdated, incomplete, misleading, speculative, emotionally persuasive, or entirely false.

Is the Evidence Relevant?

Is It Current?

Check whether newer laws, research, events, prices, policies, products, or technical releases have changed the situation.

What Is Missing?

Look for absent context, limitations, exceptions, definitions, opposing evidence, methodology, or uncertainty.

Who Else Confirms It?

Search for independent confirmation rather than several sources repeating the same original claim.

What Is the Source Trying to Achieve?

Consider whether the source is informing, educating, selling, persuading, entertaining, recruiting, frightening, or influencing the reader.

Authority

Who Is Responsible for the Information?

Authority refers to the knowledge, experience, responsibility, access, or expertise of the person or organization providing the information.

Authority should match the subject. A court is authoritative about its own ruling. A technical organization is authoritative about its protocol documentation. A medical researcher may be authoritative about a specific study.

Recognition or popularity alone does not establish relevant expertise.

Evidence

What Supports the Claim?

Reliable information should be supported by evidence appropriate to the type of claim being made.

Original Documents

Laws, court records, filings, official announcements, transcripts, technical specifications, archived materials, and direct statements.

Data and Statistics

Measurements, surveys, market data, government statistics, experimental results, databases, and documented calculations.

Research Studies

Direct Observation

Relevance

Does the Evidence Support the Exact Claim?

A source can be accurate and authoritative while still failing to support the statement attached to it.

A study about one population may not apply to another. A law in one jurisdiction may not apply elsewhere. A company announcement may describe plans rather than completed results.

The source should be read closely enough to determine exactly what it establishes.

Publication Date and Event Date Are Different

A new article may describe an old event, while an older document may remain the original and strongest source. Both dates should be understood.

Context

What Surrounding Information Changes the Meaning?

Claims can become misleading when they are separated from the conditions, definitions, assumptions, exceptions, or limitations that originally surrounded them.

Context is especially important for quotations, statistics, court rulings, research findings, financial forecasts, historical events, and social-media posts.

What Might Influence the Presentation?

A percentage is difficult to understand without knowing the total population or comparison group.

Uncertainty

Research Studies

Evaluate More Than the Headline

A study may be reported with a headline that overstates its findings or ignores its limitations.

One study rarely settles a complicated scientific, medical, psychological, economic, or social question.

Stronger confidence usually comes from multiple studies, replication, systematic reviews, transparent methodology, and consistency with the larger body of evidence.

Correlation Does Not Automatically Prove Causation

Two things may occur together without one directly causing the other.

Coincidence

Two events may occur together by chance.

Reverse Direction
