The Story Behind the Books

From Adversity to 550 Published Books

The personal journey of Bruce Goldwell: soldier, craftsman, teacher, entrepreneur, lifelong learner, and independent author.

More Than an Author

A lifetime of experiences helped shape the books.

Behind every book is a person with a story. Behind Bruce Goldwell's 550 published books is a life marked by many different careers, difficult challenges, unexpected opportunities, and a determination to keep learning.

Born Bruce Barbre, he would later write under the name Bruce Goldwell. His journey did not follow a single traditional career path. Instead, he explored different fields, developed practical skills, and continued seeking new knowledge.

Those experiences eventually became part of the foundation for an unusually diverse independent publishing catalog.

Chapter One

Service, Discipline, and Responsibility

Bruce served six years in the United States Army, including service in Vietnam and Germany. During his military career, he received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service.

Military service became one of the important experiences that shaped his outlook on life, responsibility, and perseverance.

His experience as a veteran would later influence projects designed to help fellow veterans and older Americans, including the Senior Vet Discounts initiative and the book ASK BEFORE YOU PAY.

Chapter Two

A Life of Many Careers

Bruce's professional background reflects a willingness to learn and work across different disciplines.

He worked as an architectural draftsman, operated his own drafting business, became a journeyman carpenter, worked in federal computer operations, and taught high school computer programming.

He also pursued entrepreneurship and studied business development, marketing, and new technologies.

These experiences reinforced an idea that would become central to his later work: people do not have to be defined by only one skill, career, or field of knowledge.

That philosophy is reflected in his book POLYMATH, which encourages readers to explore their abilities and continue developing new skills.

Chapter Three

When Life Took an Unexpected Turn

Not every chapter of Bruce's life was defined by professional accomplishments. He also experienced nearly a decade of homelessness, including time spent in Venice, California.

Those years brought difficult circumstances and important personal reflection.

During that period, Bruce made a prayerful commitment that, if he could rebuild his life, he would dedicate himself to helping others.

That commitment became a continuing influence on his work, encouraging him to turn personal experiences and acquired knowledge into resources that might make someone else's journey easier.

Chapter Four

The People Who Encouraged Him to Continue

Along the way, Bruce encountered mentors and teachers who helped shape his thinking about personal development, writing, and entrepreneurship.

Among those influences were Dell Grant, Bernie Dohrmann, Bob Proctor, Barry Spilchuk, and Jim Britt.

Their lessons encouraged persistence, creative thinking, overcoming fear, and maintaining a clear sense of purpose.

One particularly memorable encouragement came from Bob Proctor: "Keep going."

Those two words became an enduring reminder that progress often depends on continuing forward even when the path is uncertain.

Chapter Five

Turning Ideas into Books

Writing and publishing provided Bruce with a way to bring together his many interests and experiences.

Instead of focusing on a single category, he explored a wide range of subjects, from science fiction and spirituality to technology, personal growth, travel, and practical living.

Independent publishing made it possible to develop ideas, experiment with different topics, and reach readers without relying on traditional publishing gatekeepers.

Over time, one book became many, and the growing catalog became a record of continuing curiosity and creative effort.

Chapter Six

Technology Opens New Doors

As artificial intelligence became more accessible, Bruce began exploring how emerging technology could support writing, research, learning, and creativity.

His books SI - Super Intelligence, The Smart Senior's Guide to AI, and POLYMATH reflect his interest in helping ordinary people understand and use new technologies.

He also developed educational websites, interactive resources, and practical tools designed to extend the usefulness of his books.

For Bruce, technology represents another opportunity to continue learning and sharing knowledge, regardless of age.

Chapter Seven

Helping Seniors and Veterans

Some of Bruce's projects grew directly from his own everyday experiences.

After discovering that discounts and benefits were sometimes overlooked, he began developing resources to help seniors and veterans find available savings.

That work led to the Senior Vet Discounts initiative and the book ASK BEFORE YOU PAY, encouraging people to ask about available discounts before making purchases.

He also developed Smart Senior guides addressing travel, benefits, scams, artificial intelligence, and living on a fixed income.

These projects reflect the practical side of his publishing mission: helping people make informed decisions and improve everyday life.

Chapter Eight — October 2026

A Heart Attack, Open-Heart Surgery, and a Mission That Continues

In October 2026, Bruce faced one of the most serious challenges of his life.

After experiencing chest pain and seeking emergency medical care, he learned that he had suffered a heart attack.

He was transferred between hospitals for specialized cardiac treatment and eventually underwent quadruple coronary bypass surgery.

The experience brought the realities of serious illness, surgery, and recovery into sharp focus.

Yet even before the operation, Bruce was thinking about how the experience might become useful to others.

He proposed writing a book about surviving a heart attack, with a firsthand account of his experience followed by researched information about prevention.

During his hospital stay, he began documenting his experiences through conversations and voice transcription on his phone, preserving details while they were still fresh.

"I don't have time for dying. I'm on a mission from God."

Those were words Bruce shared with his daughter during the experience.

His recovery required rest, patience, and following medical guidance. The desire to keep writing remained part of his outlook on the future.

The experience reinforced a belief that had guided him through earlier challenges: even difficult circumstances can eventually become opportunities to help others.

Chapter Nine

550 Books and Still Writing

By the end of October 2026, Bruce Goldwell's independent publishing catalog had reached 550 books.

The titles span a wide range of subjects, reflecting a lifetime of experiences, learning, experimentation, and creativity.

At age 75, he continues exploring new ideas and developing projects designed to inform, inspire, and entertain.

The milestone is significant, but it is not intended to be the end of the story.

There are still subjects to explore, stories to tell, and people who may benefit from the knowledge and experiences he shares.

The Principles Behind the Journey

Ideas that continue to shape Bruce's work.

Keep Learning

Curiosity and the willingness to develop new skills can continue throughout life.

Keep Creating

Keep Helping

The Next Chapter

The journey continues beyond the 550-book milestone.

Bruce Goldwell's publishing journey is still unfolding. New ideas, educational resources, creative projects, and personal experiences continue to shape the work ahead.

The story is not simply about the number of books published. It is about the determination to keep learning, creating, and sharing what may be useful to others.
