Elias Vale has spent his career proving that supposedly haunted places have ordinary explanations.

Then twelve photographs arrive showing his missing sister Mara standing unchanged in locations photographed across different decades.

The trail leads Elias through impossible corridors, displaced memories, temporal loops, and eventually back to the childhood home he has avoided for forty years.

This is the beginning of the series and should be read first.

A Dark Places Novel

Book I resolves Elias and Mara's central emotional story, but the investigation of the Dark Places has only begun.

An old photograph points back toward DP-047—the abandoned motel where Elias first encountered a corridor that could measure forty-two feet and 119 feet at the same time.

The photograph contains another child.

Not Mara.

And in the reflection behind the child, a motel wing with seven doors appears to contain one more.

How the Series Develops

One Mystery at a Time

The Dark Places mythology is designed to expand gradually rather than reveal everything in the first novel.

Book I — The Personal Mystery

Elias confronts the disappearance of Mara and learns that some impossible places are real. The story remains centered on one brother, one sister, and one unresolved night.

Book II — The Wider Pattern

The investigation begins moving beyond DP-000. Room Eight suggests that Mara's case may not be the first involving a child and an impossible location.

Later Books — The Larger Question

As the series grows, Elias, Mara, Voss, and the Cartographers will confront increasingly difficult questions about memory, responsibility, truth, history, and the nature of the Dark Places themselves.

Book I is the foundation for the characters, terminology, Cartographers, and the central rules of the series.

Future Dark Places novels may feature new locations and distinct central mysteries, but the continuing character and mythology arcs build from Where the Light Stops.

Reading in publication order will preserve the intended discoveries, surprises, and evolving understanding of the mythology.
